An activity that does not impose high impact forces on joints. Swimming is one of the best low impact activities. A swimmer has to use large muscle groups of the upper and lower body, so it can be a strenuous activity, excellent for improving aerobic fitness. It has the added advantage that there is little jarring of the joints because the body is supported by water. Walking is another good low impact exercise that does not impose the mechanical stresses of high impact activities, such as running.
