A group of closely related, filamentous cyanobacteria (section III), including the poorly defined genera Lyngbya, Phormidium, and Plectonema, as well as Microcoleus and Schizothrix. All form straight filaments which may be sheathed or non-sheathed, motile or non-motile, and tend to aggregate into dense mats in freshwater and marine habitats.
