(b Paddingbüttel, nr Bremen, 1654; d Hamburg, 9 Feb. 1740). German composer, organist, and teacher. His first appointment, at the age of 20, was at Stade, where he remained for nearly 30 years. In 1702 he became organist at St Nicolai, Hamburg, where he spent the rest of his working life. His few known compositions include three cantatas, one of which, Willkommen süsser Bräutigam (‘Welcome, Sweet Bridegroom’), for Christmas, remains popular in Germany, and nine large works for organ—preludes, fugues, toccatas, and chorale settings—of a quality to rival those of Buxtehude.
