A fluorescent marker molecule (similar to fluorescein) that will not cross cell membranes but is used by microinjection in developmental biology and neuroscience to study the outline of cells, in cell lineage studies, or as an indicator of dye coupling between cells. In practice it is often compounded with carbohydrazide so that it will covalently attach to proteins.
