US dancer. He studied at San Francisco Ballet School and joined the company in 1953 becoming principal in 1955. In 1957 he joined New York City Ballet where he became leading soloist (1961–73). He created roles in several Balanchine ballets including Liebeslieder Walzer and Tchaikovsky pas de deux (both 1960) and Jewels (1967). In 1973 he became artistic director of Oklahoma City Metropolitan Ballet and in 1985 became associated with the University of Utah dance department where he is now professor. He continues to teach, and to direct seasons performed by the Ballet of Utah.
