1 (Menotti: The Telephone). Sop. Obsessed by the telephone, Lucy frustrates her boyfriend's attempts to propose to her—every time he tries, the ‘phone rings and she answers it. Eventually he realizes there is only one way to keep her attention—he goes out to a public call‐box and proposes to her by telephone. She accepts—on condition that he always remembers her number and calls her every day. Created (1947) by Marilyn Cotlow.
