English theatre manager. He was financier then manager (1842–58) of Her Majesty's Theatre, London, and played a key role in the presentation of Romantic ballet in England. A noted diplomat, his famous coup was successfully negotiating the order of appearance of the four ballerinas in Pas de quatre.
