Quick Reference

A travel agency, incorporated into the Thomson self-acclaimed ‘powerbrand’ of travel agencies in the UK in 2004, that had been the largest chain of travel agents in the United Kingdom. The name Lunn Poly derived from the combination of the Polytechnic Touring Association with Sir Henry Simpson Lunn's travel businesses. Lunn (1859–1939) was a religious reformer as well as a travel agent, and from 1895 organized tours abroad to venues such as Switzerand (for winter sports), and Italy and Israel (religious tours and cruises). His integrated packages of travel and activity revolutionized the leisure travel industry, and also offered early forms of theming to the business—Hellenic Travel, and Alpine Tours, for instance. His son, Arnold Lunn, was a pioneer of winter sports, and their expansion as forms of sport tourism, in the Alps.
