Ballet company based at Lyon's Théâtre de l'Opéra. It was founded in 1969 by Louis Erlo, with 30 to 40 dancers, and under the direction of François Adret (1984–91) and Yorgos Loukos (from 1991) established its commitment to contemporary choreography. Its repertoire has included works by Petronio, Preljocaj, Childs, Mats Ek, Forsythe, Decouflé, and de Keersmaeker. Maguy Marin was resident choreographer (1992–4), creating Coppélia and Cendrillon for the company, and Bill T. Jones succeeded her (1994–7). The company has toured widely including to the US and Russia where in 1999 it appeared at the Bolshoi Theatre, the most radical ballet company ever to perform there.
