Quick Reference

The reference to Lysanias in Luke 3: 1 as the tetrarch of Abilene NW of Damascus may be a mistake, since the only Lysanias certainly known died in 36 bce. There was, however, possibly another, unknown, Lysanias in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius (28 or 29 ce) to which Luke is referring, since an inscription bearing the name Lysanias was found at Abila, the city in Abilene, and dated between 14 and 29 ce.
