The change in phenotype of a bacterium (in terms of its morphology or synthetic properties) accompanying lysogeny (q.v.). Lysogenic cells exhibit immunity to superinfection by the same phage as that in the prophage state. Toxin production by Corynebacterium diphtheriae only occurs in strains that are lysogenic for phage beta.
