Quick Reference

A single-stranded bacteriophage cloning vehicle, with a closed circular DNA genome of approximately 6.5 kilobase pairs. The major advantage of using M13 for cloning is that the phage particles released from infected cells contain single-stranded DNA that is homologous to only one of the two complementary strands of the cloned DNA, and therefore it can be used as a template for DNA sequencing analysis.

Subjects: Genetics and Genomics.
