Anglican Evangelical philanthropist. Working as a manager of an estate in Jamaica, he was disgusted at the conditions of the slaves. He returned to England in 1792 and made the cause of the abolition of the slave-trade and of slavery his main concern. He was a member of the ‘Clapham Sect’.
