son of E. Bulwer‐Lytton, became viceroy of India (1876–80), where his ‘Forward’ policy aroused much opposition. He published several volumes of verse, at first under the pseudonym ‘Owen Meredith’. Clytemnestra, The Earl's Return, The Artist and other Poems (1855) was followed by The Wanderer (1858). His later volumes, which include King Poppy (1875), are marred by prolixity and facile versification.
