(1911–96), British diplomat and Conservative member of parliament who was Churchill's personal envoy to Tito and the partisans and head of the British military mission in Yugoslavia from September 1943. He attended the Cairo conference that November (see SEXTANT) and his mission did much to secure British government backing and aid for the partisans. See also Balkan Air Force.
