(1890–1954). Born on a farm in Grey County, Ontario, Macphail overcame her family's resistance to education for girls and graduated from high school and normal school. While teaching in rural Ontario and Alberta (1910–21) she became an organizer for the United Farmers of Ontario. In 1921 she gained the UFO nomination in Southeast Grey and went on to become the first woman member of Canada's Parliament.
