In contrast to microsociological approaches, the study of large-scale social phenomena and entities, from institutions to societies. Typical of such approaches are studies of sport's place in a particular social, political, and economic system, such as capitalism, or communism. Comparative studies of the place of a particular sporting institution in selected different societies are also based on macrosociological approaches.
