And his brother Ithel were used by the English against Owain and his father Cadwgan, and encouraged to invade Ceredigion. They succeeded in driving Owain out and were rewarded with southern Powys. When Owain returned, he reached an understanding with Madog, but they were both expelled by Iorwerth. In 1111 Madog murdered Iorwerth and his successor Cadwgan, and the English then installed Madog as ruler of southern Powys. He was subsequently captured and blinded by kinsmen. Ithel died in 1124.
