Quick Reference

(b Vicenza, c.1605; d Padua, 2 July 1660).

Italian painter, active for much of his career in Venice. He had a refreshingly individualistic style, carrying on the great painterly tradition of Bassano and Tintoretto, reinforced by the example of Feti, Liss, and Strozzi, to which he added his own note of mysterious and sometimes bizarre fantasy. He painted religious and mythological scenes and also allegorical portraits of local officials.
