The larval stage of a housefly, blowfly, or green fly that grows in rotting meat or other organic matter. Their presence signifies putrefaction or filth and is an indication to condemn public premises, such as restaurants and rooming-houses. Maggots were formerly and are still occasionally used as a therapeutic method to cleanse suppurating or gangrenous tissue.
