‘master of the horse’, an emergency magistrate nominated by the dictator. Apart from commanding the cavalry, he was the dictator's lieutenant and deputy, whether at Rome or on military service. He held imperium derived from the dictator and ranked with the praetors. His magistracy ended when his dictator laid down office.
