A white solid, MgO2. It decomposes at 100°C to release oxygen and also releases oxygen on reaction with water:2MgO2(s)+2H2O → 2Mg(OH)2+O2 The compound is prepared by reacting sodium peroxide with magnesium sulphate solution and is used as a bleach for cotton and silk.
