(Pāli). The Great Stūpa at Anurādhapura in Sri Lanka which has been a centre for pilgrimage down the centuries. It was constructed by King Duṭṭhagāmaṇi Abhaya after his victory of the Tamils, although he did not live to see the work fully completed. Tradition asserts that relics of the Buddha were miraculously obtained and enshrined in the relic chamber. The structure itself has been the object of continous pilgrimage and devotion over the last 2,000 years, undergoing periodic works of reconstruction and restoration.
