Egyptian Islamic leader who reasserted al-Azhar's independence from outside political control. Obtained a doctoral degree in philosophy from the Sorbonne in 1940. Appointed shaykh of al-Azhar by Anwar Sadat in 1973. Promoted Sufism based on the Quran and Sunnah. Called for the implementation of Islamic law in Egypt.
