Quick Reference

Software which administers the process of creating and maintaining a mailing list. Such software allows a mailing list administrator to set up a mailing list; permits the administrator to add recipients to the list and delete others; sends emails to the members of a list; allows users to email requests to register and deregister; and provides summary facilities for a mailing list administrator, such as the identity of members of a list who have had bounced email messages. Mailing list software can also function with little input from an administrator: for example, Listserv software allows individual subscribers to add their names to or delete their names from a mailing list. Mailing list software can range from the very simple which allows the maintenance of single lists to sophisticated software which administers hierarchic collections of lists.
