A depressive disorder characterized by one or more major depressive episodes without any history of manic, mixed, or hypomanic episodes. Up to 15 per cent of people with severe major depressive disorder commit suicide each year. Also called major depression. See also antidepressant, cognitive therapy, inositol, MHPG.
