Russian dancer and director. He studied at the Moscow Ballet School and went on to dance with Moscow Classical Ballet, the Vienna State Opera Ballet, and the National Ballet of Canada. In 1995 he joined American Ballet Theatre as a principal, where Duato's Without Words was created to showcase his compelling stage presence. He also danced regularly with Stuttgart Ballet. In 1999 he made his choreographic debut with his own staging of La Bayadère for the Vienna State Opera and in 2002 he became artistic director of the State Opera Ballet in former East Berlin. Two years later he was appointed director of the Berlin State Ballet, an amalgam of the three former Berlin companies. He has since brought in new dancers, as well as attracting guest ballerinas like Vishneva, and enlarged the company's repertory of both contemporary and classic works. Malakhov performs with the company while continuing to guest internationally.
