Former British central African protectorate of Nyasaland. The missionary explorer David Livingstone led the first group of Britons to the region in 1859 and after initial set‐backs Nyasaland became a thriving centre of missionary activity. A British protectorate was declared in 1893. Nyasaland became independent as Malawi in 1964 and a republic in 1966.
