Quick Reference

The high priest's slave who bore this name (John 18: 10), common among Nabataean Arabs, meaning ‘king’, had his right ear cut off by a disciple during Jesus' arrest. Only John mentions the name, and that it was Peter who struck—so adding to the offence of Peter's denials (18: 25–7). It is characteristic of Luke, who several times notices the compassion of Jesus, that he records that Jesus healed (restored?) the severed member (22: 51).
