One of the small republican states at the time of the Buddha that formed part of the Vṛjian confederacy (see Vajjī), including the Licchavis and the Videhas. At that time, the country was divided into two parts with their respective capitals at Pāvā andKuśinagara. The Buddha took his last meal at the house of the metal-worker Cunda in Pāvā from whence he travelled on to Kuśinagara where he died. Soon after the Buddha's passing, the entire Vṛjian confederacy was assimilated into the expanding Magadhan Empire.
