Drinks containing maltodextrins, polysaccharides formed during the incomplete breakdown of starch. They can provide as much as 10 times the energy of glucose drinks with the same osmolarity without slowing the rate of gastric emptying. They are quite popular with athletes because they are not as sweet-tasting as glucose drinks and they provide quite a palatable way to consume a lot of carbohydrate. Maltodextrin drinks taken 3 h before or during an endurance activity may delay fatigue, but their value has not yet been fully evaluated.
