A coastal site, in Tamil Nadu, 30 miles south of Chennai (Madras). It was the main port of the Paḻḻava dynasty (c.4th–8th centuries ce), which was responsible for constructing its seventeen rock-cut and monolithic temples (7th–8th century) (including the well-known ‘shore temple’), the earliest of their kind in southern India. It is celebrated for the quality of its sculptures.
