Jimmy Mallon was born 9 May 1875 in Manchester, and died 12 April 1961 in London. In 1921, he married Stella Katherine, the daughter of A.G. Gardiner, the editor of the Daily News. In the same year, he was awarded an honorary MA from Manchester University, followed by an honorary doctorate from Liverpool University in 1944. In 1939, Mallon was made a Companion of Honour, and in 1955 he was awarded the Margaret McMillan medal.
