An employer-led initiative launched in 1988 to improve the quality of management education in the UK and raise the status of management as a profession. The MCI was founded on a belief that deficiencies in management competence were one of the reasons for the relative underperformance of the UK economy. Since its launch, the MCI has become the government's designated ‘lead body’ for the development of standards of competence for the occupation of management (see National Vocational Qualifications). Its early ambition to create a professional chartered institute for management, however, has been dropped.
