Quick Reference

One of the acute phase proteins (MBL, formerly mannan-binding protein, MBP, collectin-1, 248 aa) secreted by the liver, structurally related to complement C1. MBL binds mannans on the surface of various microorganisms including bacteria, yeasts, parasitic protozoa, and viruses, causing opsonization and activating the complement cascade through MASP. Deficiency is associated with frequent infections in childhood, one polymorphism is associated with susceptibility to gestational diabetes mellitus, and the D variant is significantly more common in preterm infants
