An equation that relates the velocity (V) of water flowing through a stream to the hydraulic radius of the stream (R), its slope (s), and an estimate of its bed roughness (n). V = (Rs½)/n. The equation was developed by the Irish engineer Robert Manning (1816–97) and its first version appeared in 1891 in Manning's paper ‘On the flow of water in open channels and pipes’ (Transactions of the Institution of Civil Engineers of Ireland).
