Quick Reference

The resistance of the bed of a channel to the flow of water in it. Representative values of the coefficient are 0.010 for a glassy surface to 0.020 for alluvial channels with large dunes. See Mohamoud (2007) J. Am. Water Resources Ass. 43, 5 for the equations and their application. Smith et al. (2007) PPG31, 4 note that the application of the Manning equation also requires a measure of resistance. N. Gordon et al. (2004) suggest that n can be thought of as a calibration factor.
