Quick Reference

A Latin term for an inn of the cursus publicus. A small town (posting‐station), or an inn, especially for government officials. They were typically spaced one day's journey apart; many were defended or enclosed by a rampart, with a gatehouse, guardrooms for the road police, and a canteen or taberna. Between mansiones there were rest houses, mutationes, with stables for changing horses and a small taberna for refreshing the riders.
