(1820–1903), in July 1849 set out along the Oregon Trail for the gold rush but upon reaching Fort Bridger thought he could float down the Green and Colorado rivers to California. With rough portages he did make his way to Arizona, then trekked via desert land to southern California (arriving March 1850) as later recounted in Death Valley in '49 (1894, edited version 1927). Lesser sketches were collected in The Jayhawkers' Oath (1949).
