(b Milan, 2 Feb. 1835; d Milan, 15 Mar. 1905)
Italian mime dancer and choreographer. He created his first ballet, La morte di Masaniello, in 1858, and built on his successes in Rome and Milan to enjoy considerable international fame. His ballets were staged around the world although by modern standards their dance content was minimal, their effects created through mime and through strikingly staged tableaux and processions.
