Quick Reference

‘Fortress, Rock of my salvation’, the hymn, of which these are the opening words, sung on Hanukkah to a well-known melody in celebration of the deliverance by the Maccabees, commemorated on this festival, and other deliverances from tyranny. The hymn itself dates from the thirteenth century, the melody from the fifteenth century, both in Germany, and they were consequently used only by Ashkenazi Jews until recently adopted by the Sephardim as well.
