Quick Reference

(Skt., mantra vehicle). A general term for the path of tantric Buddhism which highlights the importance of mantras in that practice. The term seems to have evolved from the earlier ‘mantra method’ (mantra-naya) in contrast to the ‘perfection method’ (pāramitā-naya), used when the tantric path was seen as an alternative approach within Mahāyāna as a whole. The term ‘Mantrayāna’ is more widely used in traditional literature than the synonymous Vajrayāna.

Subjects: Buddhism.
