Iranian cleric. Studied at Najaf and Qom with Ayatollah Abd al-Karim Haeri Yazdi and later taught there. In addition to prolific scholarship, he was devoted to social and educational activities and was noted for collecting manuscripts on Shiism and Islamic studies in general. The Marashi Library in Qom, initially started in 1966, is now a significant collection. He was among a group of grand ayatollahs inside Iran who initially supported the revolution of 1979, demanding the return of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini (d. 1989) from exile.
