Bp. of Ancyra and a supporter of the homoousion at the Council of Nicaea. He was deposed from his see in 336, restored in 337, and again expelled c.339. He taught that in the Unity of the Godhead the Son and the Spirit emerged as independent entities only for the purposes of Creation and Redemption; when the redemptive work is achieved they will be resumed into the Divine Unity. The clause in the Nicene Creed, ‘whose kingdom shall have no end’, was inserted to combat his teaching.
