A NASA Mars probe launched in December 1998 to investigate the planet's cycles of water, carbon dioxide, and dust. Communications with the spacecraft were lost in September 1999. An investigation found that the spacecraft's manoeuvres to place it into a Mars orbit failed because one NASA spacecraft team had used imperial measurements and the other team had used metric ones.
