(Mozart: Le nozze di Figaro). Sop. (but more often sung by mez.). Housekeeper to Dr Bartolo. Although twice Figaro's age, she wants to compel him to marry her to repay a loan and in this she is aided by Bartolo who wants to get his own back on Figaro for having helped Almaviva abduct Rosina, Bartolo's ward. She realizes later that Figaro is her long-lost son, of whom Bartolo is the father. Created (1786) by Maria Mandini (whose husband created Count Almaviva).
