A deposit a trader has to make with either a stockbroker or an exchange to guarantee that they will complete a transaction. Buying shares on margin means borrowing money from a stockbroker to fund a fraction of the investment. To safeguard the broker, a buyer is required to deposit a margin, that is a fraction of the price sufficient to protect the seller against loss if the buyer cannot complete.
