Danish Protestant theologian. From 1854 he was Bp. of Seeland. His main work, Den Christelige Dogmatik (1849; Eng. tr., 1866), rests on the principle of the harmony between faith and knowledge, in the light of which he interpreted the Lutheran system of doctrine. He is chiefly remembered as S. Kierkegaard's principal opponent in his attack on the Established Church.
