(1841–1928). Dramatist, journalist and politician. He was minister for education (1892–3) and minister for the colonies (1915–19). His theatrical writings, mainly collected in Al teatro (1895), criticized the cultural divisions persisting after Unification, called for state support for the Italian theatre and exhorted dramatists to return to imitating life.
