Canadian statesman; Prime Minister (2003–06). A businessman, he entered parliament in 1988 as a Liberal MP and was Finance Minister (1993–2002) under Jean Chrétien. He ousted Chrétien as leader of the Liberal Party in 2003 and became Prime Minister. Heading a minority government after the 2004 elections, Martin survived until a vote of no confidence forced elections in 2006, at which he was defeated by the Conservative Party under Stephen Harper.
